Part 14: Honey
“We need your shirt off, Prongs, old boy,” Sirius said, rolling up his sleeves and kneeling on the bed beside James. Peter and Remus were at a desk across the room, fiddling with something they’d brought back with them. Try as he might, craning his neck and leaning from one side to the other, James could not get a good look at whatever the something was exactly or why it might require him to be shirtless. Sirius helped him off with it, if only to expedite the process.
James shivered once when his shirt was off. Sirius reassured him that he would be warm again in no time. This made James shiver again. “What is this?” James asked. “What are you goig to do to be?”
“It’s nothing bad,” Remus said, a large, metal spoon in one hand and a jar of something orangey-yellow. “It’s just honey. You like honey, right?”
James sniffled and rubbed two fingers under his nose. “Id by tea?”
Peter grinned as he followed right behind Remus as back-up. “On your chest.”
“My—!” James started to get up, but Sirius held him down on the bed. A little light-headed from the tea, James was slow to react. The cold and fever had drained most of his energy, so James did not fight back.
“It’s an old remedy we found,” Sirius explained. “Smearing honey on the chest of someone who has a cold is supposed to help.”
James was a little nervous at the sight of Remus dipping the spoon into the jar and scooping out a large amount of honey. “Helb who?” The only people he could see this helping were his friends, who would certainly be amused by the situation and the fact that James had somehow allowed it. “Add there’s a reasod sobe rebedies stay as old rebedies.”
“It’s just honey, honey,” Remus said playfully, kneeling on the bed, straddling James. He pulled the spoon out. The sticky honey dripped slowly in thin streams, finally falling onto James’ stomach. James gave a start. As Remus turned the spoon, touching large quantities of the honey directly to James’ chest, James repeated Lily’s name to himself several times to remind himself why he was doing this.
He closed his eyes, nose tickling, then opened his eyes right away. “Hey… wait. I thidk I gotta…” They’d anticipated that, of course. Peter had the tissue box and held it out, but James was slow in reaching for it, no doubt thanks to the tea. James’ nostrils twitched. “hahhhh?” He tried again to get his hand to the box, and failed.
But Peter pulled out one, two, three tissues. Sirius grabbed them from him in a flash and cupped them to James’ face in time for the “hahhh-Shooo! hahhChoo! H’Shooo! Sniff! Hah-Chooo!” James grimaced as Sirius folded the tissues around his nose, then rubbed with a dry portion.
“Bless you,” Sirius said. Peter handed him another tissue, and Sirius rubbed with it as well.
Remus dipped the spoon back into the jar, extracting a heaping spoonful. He rubbed it around in a circular motion, spreading the honey in a thin coating. “How does it feel?”
“Feels… sticky,” James said with a laugh. But it felt weirder than that. He felt light, almost like he was floating. Each of Remus’ movements seemed magnified to James, and the feelings shot through his whole body. The sensation was strong and strange, tingly and ticklish.
He barely noticed the tickle in his nose until it was too late for him to do anything about it. “hahhh-HahShooo!”
“Whoa!” Sirius pulled a face and grabbed a tissue from the box. He wiped the side of his face and neck. “Watch it there, Mate. If you sneeze on my boyfriend and get him sick a cold’ll be the last of your worries,” he joked. He pulled out another tissue and rubbed it against James’ nose.
“Oops,” James muttered, opening his eyes and inspecting the number Remus was doing on his chest.
“I’ll forgive you,” Sirius said. “This time.” He poked James in the chest and made another face as some honey stuck to the tip. “But only because I know what’s next for you.”
James sniffed worriedly. “Does this bead I’b dode with the hodey?”

Date: 2006-09-03 06:16 pm (UTC)heehee I'm glad you were amused. Poor James. Things will definitely be getting worse for the sick guy.
And that's the first time I've seen honey used for this purpose.
When I came up with the idea for this fic, I researched cures for the common cold (mmm, fun research, to be sure!) and came up with about 40 different "natural" remedies from various time periods and cultures. Honey was one of them- apparently someone somewhere at sometime decided it worked. But, yeah, there are a lot of remedies I'd never heard of before... which is why it's fun to write. Poor sticky Prongs *G*
I'd almost suspect he had ulterior, rather more kinky motives, except that his boyfriend's right there too. *G*
In my horribly messed-up mind, all the Marauders have a bit of a crush on James, whether they'll admit it or not. How can you not love James Potter, right? Which is why it's fun to write something like this where he's in the middle and they're all trying to help him.
I've always loved the straddling, rubbing-something-on-belly image associated with h/c and have always thought there should be much more of that in our fics... but I don't want to over-use it :-)

Date: 2006-09-04 02:42 am (UTC)Love this chapter, I can so picture Remus slathering honey all over poor shirtless James. The sneezing is nummy, and I am such a sucker for boys taking care of their sick friends. I love them looking after James.
And my favorite part:
He barely noticed the tickle in his nose until it was too late for him to do anything about it. “hahhh-HahShooo!”
“Whoa!” Sirius pulled a face and grabbed a tissue from the box. He wiped the side of his face and neck. “Watch it there, Mate. If you sneeze on my boyfriend and get him sick a cold’ll be the last of your worries,” he joked. He pulled out another tissue and rubbed it against James’ nose.
It's good to know that Sirius hasn't forgotten to take care of his Moony.
Thank you :)

Date: 2006-09-04 04:11 am (UTC)Absolutely! Sirius knows what's important :-) Methinks this story needs more puppiness soon...
But I'm glad you liked that part. I wrote it months ago and I re-read it today and laughed, too.
You have totally made my night! Coming home after a long weekend and finding new SF from you :) I couldn't ask for anything more.
Awww, I'm glad I could help end your weekend on a happy note, then!

It's a fun concept to play with, especially since I consider James to be sort of the central figure in the Marauder gang (I'm sure that's not how it actually was intended to be in canon, but that's how it plays out in my mind). I'm glad you're enjoying it, and the images. heehee Wonder where Remus developed those skills, eh?
