Aug. 6th, 2012 12:49 pmBrickfair was this past weekend. I made a tiny Hunger Games MOC (The Girl on Fire) to match the theme this year (Fire). With most of my LEGO boxed up for my move, I had limited resources to work with, but I showed something and it was fun making new friends and seeing people I hadn't seen since last year.
Yesterday, though, I woke up and my voice was a little hoarse. Today, it's worse. I feel fine, I just can't talk. It's super strange. I thought maybe it was lack of sleep, so I slept in today (I even slept through most of two Supernatural episodes!). And it's still bad. I didn't do all that much talking this weekend, so I have no idea what this is.
Yesterday at Brickfair, a guy came up to me and said "I know you. You were my student." I looked up and it was my high school computer science teacher. I hadn't seen him in 14 years, but he recognized me and my name. There were hugs and I met his son, who is in college and is a huge LEGO fan (I encouraged him to display next year), and apparently they cancelled computer science at my old high school, which shocked me and makes me super angry. He moved to a different school in 2006 and just retired this past May. It was so neat to see him and I hope he was happy to find out I'm working in computers now :-)
I met a couple Nerdfighters at Brickfair as well, thanks to my friend Obi-Mom making a DFTBA and putting it on the table in front of my MOC. And two of my friends came to see me at Brickfair on Saturday, which was so great, considering I didn't really build anything this year. LOL
My two favorite MOCs this year were a gigantic to-scale, inside mostly built-out model of Serenity. I gasped out loud when I saw it across the room on Friday and then I actually got tears in my eyes when I looked in the cockpit and saw a little dino toy. This thing was over seven feet long and took him 2 years to build. Fucking amazing, I can't even begin to explain how happy I am that this exists in the world. My other favorite was a fantastic Rivendell, about 4 feet long by 3 feet deep by 3-4 feet high. Every bit was intricately detailed, from Gimli & Gloin by the council circle to Gandalf and Elrond in discussion in a corridor to Boromir with his shield crossing a footbridge to Sam and Frodo standing on a balcony to Bilbo sitting and writing. I'm talking trees and gazebos and waterfalls and I wanted desperately to be shrunk down to minifigure size so I could live in there.
Last night I wrote my 100th story of 2012! Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about the last ABC fics. I have one more finished that needs to be read over before I post it and one in progress that needs to be rewritten a little. But 100 stories and it's only August--I think that's pretty freakin' awesome, don't you?
